Pepsi vs. Tenenbaums




Watch this new Pepsi Commercial.

I got a strange feeling from this spot. From the very beginning, I felt like I was watching The Royal Tenenbaums. Is it just me? It's definitely not a shot for shot remake like we saw with the Apple/Postal Service video. But it still feels a little too similar for my liking. A message to advertisers: If you're trying to be hip and original, be hip and original.

I definitely see what you are speaking about, but the spot is still pretty cool. It affects a hipster mood very successfully, the same feel of The Tenebaums perhaps, even uses similar characters and settings and shots, but it does it well. Isn't being hip these days in part connected to how you borrow from the past to create your own style?

I agree. The spot is well done. But it blurs the line between referencing and stealing. If I felt the spot was paying homage to the Tenenbaums, I might actually appreciate it. But the spot doesn't feel that way. This spot seems more like it is stealing the look and feel of a hip movie and claiming it as Pepsi's own. And that's not cool.
