The Ramp

This is some footage shot from a train of a giant ramp that was built in the small German town of Oberpfaffelbachen. The ramp was built with the the intentions of launching a car from Germany into America. There was a documentary made about the ramp, and the town that built it that you can watch here.

Now Please assist me with a little experiment. Look at your clock. What time is it? Now click on the links above. Watch. Explore a bit. Then come back and answer the questions in the comment sections (and no cheating) Thank you.

1. Did you ever find out what car the German town is attempting to launch?

2. If you answered yes to questions 1: How long did it take you to figure out?

3. Did you you use Google to figure it out?

4. Did you care?

I should rephrase question 4.

4. Did the video or site make you want to find out what the ramp was all about and which car they were trying to launch?

1) BMW

2) 3 minutes

3) no

4) The video on your site yes, but the reveal is too early (3 minutes). When you get for sure it's an ad, you skip.

1. Some sort of BMW
2. i remember it being on the first link in the history copy.
3. nope
4. no. and the video was far too long. after you get the joke it just gets boring and you're ready to leave the site. it was basically a less funny version of "waiting for gufman".

as of right now, i have zero interest in BMW or learning about them.

1. I didn't.
3. I didn't.
4. I didn't.

You didn't ask, but I spent about two minutes total at both sites before I lost interest and assumed it was all some silly fabrication. Whether this was the fabrication of someone with no life to speak of, or of some advertiser trying too hard, I also didn't care.

1. BMW 1-Series

2. Maybe 3 minutes

3. No.

4. Not sure.

I wasn't sure where this was going and what the punch line was going to be, but it started to seem overly surreal at one point, believable but surreal. I think this would be at least somewhat more amusing to an American gearhead, one who gets the joke (at least a bit) about Bavaria, and can connect that to to BMW. But once I realized that it was a current car they were launching (one that was just released in the U.S.), it seemed less interesting. It would have been a lot more believable if all of this story had happened 100 years ago.

When I got to line "launhing BMW 1-series".. at the "rampenfest" page I got it..

It was too early in the story.. after that it's just a few chuckles worth to keep on.. I only lasted 20 seconds of the priest in the documentary... jumped to the middle.. lasted 5 more seconds.

I applaud the effort, but then again, I can see the effort. I'm conflicted.

I can appreciate a spot that doesn't try to suck you in by making you think it's not a spot. But when they try to act like they got one over on you, it gets lame.

The idea that this guy is a marketing genius could've been a decent place to start.

Website was fun. I think it's because I was in on the gag.

1. Yes. BMW 1 series in America (from the website)

2. A couple minutes.

3. No Google needed

4. Didn't really care. I was bored by the video, skipped forward a bit to see if it got more interesting, and then gave up watching. I was hoping to see a car launch off the ramp.

1. BMW 1-series
2. Less than 5 minutes
3. No, clicked through the nav bar on the website and came across it there
4. The site was interesting to begin with, but the people and story there weren't developed enough for me to care once I'd read the BMW plug (haven't watched the movie because it seemed like it would be long)
