My definition of advertising: Convincing people to buy sh*t they don't need at a somewhat fair price.
Tom, I'm an Advertising student and I remember in my first week of class my Broadcast Media teacher told us a story about how advertising her let her to find her favourite pair of jeans.
Ever since that day, I've been trying to look at advertising as a tool to get introduce appropriate products/services to people who need/want them.
I'm convinced that there is no useful definition of advertising. I regard almost any communication in any way related to and disseminating from a brand, to be advertising. You could argue that this is itself a definition of advertising, but it's not very helpful because there exists no one aspect, characteristic or property that is common to all instances of advertising, defined this broadly.
To give to Media/Press liberty from State and Government.
A sexy girl,a good joke and a big logo ...
.. and something like "call 800-xxx now" at the end
(maybe that's more à description than à definition ... but whatever ... i think it's pretty much accurate)
getting across the message of what your company/product/service is about, and what exactly you do/it does, in an easy-to-understand format?
Any deliberate attempt to generate consumer enthusiasm for a brand/service?
Whether it sells or not isn't a part of the definition of advertising; it's just the distinction between advertising that does or doesn't work...
